About this HTTP status code quiz

HTTP status codes are the three-digit numbers a server returns with every response, and knowing them by heart makes debugging APIs and web apps far faster. This quiz focuses on the 23 codes that actually show up in day-to-day work — the 2xx success codes, the 3xx redirects, the 4xx client errors like 401, 403, 404 and 429, and the 5xx server errors like 500, 502, 503 and 504.

Each question either shows you a code and asks for its meaning, or describes a real situation and asks which code fits. Wrong answers are drawn from codes with nearby numbers, so you have to actually know 302 from 307 rather than guess by range. Every answer is followed by a plain-language explanation, and the cheat sheet lists all 23 codes grouped by class for quick review. It runs entirely in your browser, needs no signup, and saves your best score locally.

Click Start quiz. You get 15 questions drawn at random from the 23 most common HTTP status codes.

2. Answer each question

Two formats are mixed: pick the meaning of a shown code, or pick the code that fits a described situation. Tap one of the four choices.

3. Read the explanation

After you answer, the correct choice turns green and a one-line explanation shows what the code really means. Press Next.

4. Check your score

At the end you get a score out of 15 and your best run is saved. Open the cheat sheet to review every code.

Frequently asked questions

401 Unauthorized means the request lacks valid authentication credentials — the server does not know who you are, and sending correct credentials may fix it. 403 Forbidden means the server knows who you are but refuses to grant access — logging in again will not help because your account simply is not allowed to do this. In short: 401 is authenticate yourself, 403 is you are authenticated but not permitted.
All three are server-side 5xx errors. 502 Bad Gateway means a proxy or gateway received an invalid response from the upstream server it was trying to reach. 503 Service Unavailable means the server itself is temporarily unable to handle the request, usually because it is overloaded or down for maintenance. 504 Gateway Timeout means a gateway or proxy did not get a response from the upstream server in time. 502 and 504 point at a broken or slow backend behind a proxy; 503 is the front server telling you it cannot cope right now.
Use 301 Moved Permanently when a URL has changed for good and you want search engines to transfer ranking to the new address; browsers and crawlers will cache it. Use 302 Found for a temporary redirect when the original URL will come back. Both 301 and 302 historically let clients change the method to GET on redirect. Use 308 Permanent Redirect when you need a permanent redirect that preserves the original HTTP method and body, for example redirecting a POST without downgrading it to GET.
429 Too Many Requests means you have sent too many requests in a given amount of time and the server is rate limiting you. It is common when hitting an API faster than its quota allows. The response often includes a Retry-After header telling you how many seconds to wait. The fix is to slow down, add backoff between retries, cache responses, or request a higher rate limit.
The IANA HTTP Status Code Registry lists around 70 assigned codes across five classes: 1xx informational, 2xx success, 3xx redirection, 4xx client errors, and 5xx server errors. In everyday web development you only need about 20 to 25 of them. This quiz drills the 23 codes that come up most often in real APIs and web apps.
