Number Memory Test

A number flashes on screen, then you type it back from memory. Every level adds one more digit — find out how many digits you can remember.

This measures digit span — the digits you can hold in short-term memory right now. Tiredness, distraction, and stress lower it; practice and chunking raise it. Treat one run as a snapshot.

About this number memory test

This number memory test shows you a number for a few seconds, hides it, and asks you to type it back. Level 1 is a single digit; each level you clear adds one more digit, so level N is an N-digit number. Get it exactly right and you advance; one wrong digit ends the run. The level you reach is your digit span — the number of digits you were able to hold in short-term memory. It is the same idea as the digit-span subtest used in the WAIS intelligence battery, minus the clinician.

The average adult reaches about level 7, matching the "magic number seven, plus or minus two" that psychologist George Miller described in 1956. The number is shown longer at higher levels (a tunable 2000 + level × 1000 ms) so that reading speed is not the bottleneck. Your best level is saved in your browser with localStorage so you can try to beat it. Everything runs client-side — no signup, no data leaves your device.

How to use this number memory test

1. Start the test

Click Start. A one-digit number appears with a shrinking bar showing how long it stays visible.

2. Memorise the number

Read it and hold it in your head. Higher levels show the number longer, so use the time to chunk the digits into groups.

3. Type it back

When the number hides, an input box appears. Type what you remember and press Enter or Submit.

4. Climb the levels

Correct answers add a digit and move you up a level. One wrong digit ends the run and shows the level you reached.

Frequently asked questions

Most adults can hold about 7 digits in short-term memory, which is why this test's average score lands near level 7. The classic figure from George Miller's 1956 paper is 7 plus or minus 2, so a range of roughly 5 to 9 digits is completely normal. Reaching level 8 or 9 puts you above average, and past level 10 you are almost certainly using a memory technique such as chunking rather than raw short-term memory.
On this test, reaching level 7 is average, level 8 to 9 is good, and level 10 or higher is excellent. The digit span you reach equals the number of digits you correctly recalled on your last successful level. Scores drop with tiredness, distraction, and stress, and rise with practice, so treat one run as a snapshot rather than a fixed measure of your memory.
Miller's Law comes from psychologist George A. Miller, who observed in 1956 that the number of objects an average person can hold in working memory is about 7, plus or minus 2. He called it the magic number seven. Later research suggests the true limit for unrelated items is closer to 4 chunks, and that the 7-digit result depends on being able to rehearse the digits as sound. It remains a useful rule of thumb for interface and phone-number design.
Chunking means grouping single digits into larger meaningful units. Instead of remembering 4 1 9 2 8 3 as six separate items, you store 419, 283 as two chunks, or tie them to a year, an age, or an area code. Rehearsing the digits out loud, visualising them, and using the major system to turn numbers into words all push your span well past 7. Regular practice on tests like this one also produces steady gains.
There is a modest correlation. Digit span is one component of working memory, and working memory capacity correlates with fluid intelligence and is included in IQ batteries such as the WAIS. But the link is far from one to one: motivation, attention, practice, language, and whether you use memory strategies all affect your score. A single number memory result says very little about anyone's overall intelligence.
