Sequence Memory Test

Watch the tiles flash, then repeat the pattern back. Every level adds one more tile to remember. See how long a sequence your visual memory can hold.

About this sequence memory test

This sequence memory test is the "remember the pattern" game popularised by Human Benchmark. A 3×3 grid of tiles sits in front of you. Each round the current sequence plays back — tiles light up one at a time — and then one new random tile is added to the end, so the pattern grows by exactly one tile per level. Your job is to click or tap the tiles back in the same order. Reproduce the whole sequence and you advance; a single wrong tile ends the run at the level you reached.

The score is simply the sequence length you managed before making a mistake. The average score is about 6, which matches the well-known "seven plus or minus two" limit on short-term memory. The test loads instantly, works with a mouse or on a touchscreen, stores your best level locally in your browser, and never sends anything to a server.

How to use this sequence memory test

1. Press Start

The grid locks and the first tile flashes. Watch closely — input is disabled while the sequence plays.

2. Watch the pattern

Each round the whole sequence replays from the start, then one new tile is added at the end.

3. Repeat it back

Click or tap the tiles in the same order. Each tap flashes briefly so you can track your progress.

4. Advance or retry

A full correct sequence moves you up a level. One wrong tile ends the run — press Try again to restart from level 1.

Frequently asked questions

On a 3x3 grid sequence memory test, reaching level 8 or 9 is a solid result and level 10 and above puts you well ahead of most players. The average score is around 6, which lines up with the classic finding that human short-term memory holds about seven items. Getting past level 12 is rare and usually means you are chunking the pattern or using a spatial strategy rather than memorising tile by tile.
It measures visuospatial working memory: your ability to hold an ordered series of locations in mind for a few seconds and then reproduce them in the correct order. Because the sequence grows by one tile each level, it also probes your memory span, the maximum number of items you can keep active at once. It is a spatial analogue of a digit span test, which uses numbers instead of positions.
Practice helps in the short term, and strategies help more: turn the sequence into a shape or a path rather than a list of separate tiles, group tiles into chunks of two or three, and say the positions to yourself as they flash. Outside the test, regular aerobic exercise, good sleep, and dual n-back or similar training show small transfer effects. Do not expect large permanent gains; most improvement is task-specific.
Across large samples of this style of test the average score is about 6, meaning most people fail somewhere around a six-tile sequence. Scores are roughly normally distributed: many people land between 5 and 8, a small group struggles past 4, and a small group reaches 10 or more. Fatigue, distraction, and playback speed all shift an individual result by a level or two from one session to the next.
It is closely related. The Corsi block-tapping test, used in clinical neuropsychology, has an examiner tap a set of irregularly arranged blocks in sequence while the participant repeats the taps, with span typically around five. This online version uses a regular 3x3 grid, automated playback, and an ever-growing sequence, so it is a casual adaptation of the same idea rather than a validated clinical instrument.
